ANDREW RABENECK, BORN 1942
architect and construction historian

Andrew Rabeneck’s father Leo arrived in England in 1919 at the age of five. After schooling at St. Paul’s he read mechanical engineering at Imperial College. Leo’s parents came from a German-Russian manufacturing family and had fled to England to escape from communist Russia. Andrew’s mother Norah was the daughter of Henry Brooks, a banker at Rothschilds. Andrew Rabeneck started as an architect and planner working in London and in America, before becoming responsible for corporate real estate for Salomon Brothers in Europe from 1987 to 1998. He then did a four year stint building office fit outs around Europe as a contractor, before ending up looking after the estate at Imperial College in London until 2006, when he went back to school for an MSc in History of Science, Technology and Medicine.
