tailor

Philip Hoffbrand was brought by his parents, Wolf and Hannah, together with his older brother Abraham, sister Edith, and younger brother Sam to England in 1901. Pogroms against Jews were rife in Eastern Europe and many Jews were escaping to North and South America, Western Europe and other countries including Palestine. Philip left school at the age of 11 to become a tailor. He served as a tailor in the First World War from November 22 1917 in the 3rd battalion of the Leicester regiment, sewing and mending soldiers’ uniforms. He later established his own bespoke tailoring business which employed up to ten people. He and his wife Minnie had two sons, Barry and Victor, both of whom became distinguished academics.
