CHEMICAL ENGINEER AND PARSON
Fred Steadman, the son of a miner, won a scholarship to Wakefield Grammar School, and a Miners Welfare scholarship to Oxford University, where he read chemistry. He joined ICI, rising to senior positions, initially in the alkali division. His work took him on numerous overseas trips across Europe, Africa, the Far East and America. In 1965, at the age of 54, he left ICI and embarked on a second career as an ordained priest in the Church of England.
