DAVID wedderburn, born 1835
traveller, diarist and lIBERAL mp

Sir David Wedderburn Bt was a traveller, diarist and Member of Parliament. His travels, at a time when long distance travel was slow and uncomfortable, took him to dozens of countries, including Ireland, Iceland, Denmark, Russia, Germany, France, Spain, Ukraine, India, China, New Zealand, Australia, South Africa, Canada and the United States of America. He recorded his travels in meticulous diaries, which covered the politics, flora, fauna, and local customs of the countries he visited. He had a keen eye and boundless curiosity. As an MP he took a particular interest in foreign affairs. He died unmarried at the age of 47, his last illness being attributed to the rigours of a winter trip to Russia.
