Alexander Stanier, Born 1899
DECORATED OFFICER IN TWO WORLD WARS

Sir Alexander Stanier was a highly decorated British army officer, who served in both World Wars. As a junior officer serving in the Welsh Guards in the First World War he experienced very dangerous conditions in the trenches and was awarded the MC and DSO. During the Second World War he served both at the evacuation of the British Expeditionary Force from Boulogne, and commanded a brigade during the D Day landings. Following the D Day landings his brigade liberated Arromanches and took part in the defeat of German forces. He was awarded a second DSO for bravery during these actions. He was shot in the hand during the First World War, and lost the sight of his left eye in an accidental explosion during a training exercise between the wars. But unlike many of his colleagues he survived both wars, and lived in retirement to the age of 96.
