william harding scott, born 1862
electrical engineer

William Harding Scott was a British pioneer in the practical use of electricity. He built a successful company designing and manufacturing dynamos and electric motors. He installed the first electric street lighting in Norwich; it was said that the wires below the pavement got so hot that the ground soon dried after rain. He used batteries to top up power when demand was high, another early advance. He also put the first electric lighting in the Norwich City Library.
