william bell, born 1792
EAST INDIA COMPANY AND ARTILLERYMAN
William Bell was born on 3rd September 1792, the eldest son of a well to do mercantile family living in the busy Edinburgh parish of South Leith. He spent an adventurous career as a member of the East India Company. Alongside his employment by the East India Company he joined the Bengal Artillery. This involved him in many military engagements, including the siege of Djocjocarta and the Third Mahatta War. H later joined the Bengal Horse Artillery, and combined this with the role of Executive Officer in the Public Works Department. He was married three times (his first two wives having died in India) and died in Calcutta at the age of 44.
