thomas ismay, born 1837
victorian shipping magnate
The son of a Cumberland shipbuilder and shipowner, Thomas Ismay bought a small bankrupt shipping line and built it into the great White Star Line which dominated transatlantic liner travel. The RMS Celtic, at 700 feet in length, was at the time the largest ship in the world. His son was Joseph Bruce Ismay, who travelled on (and survived) the maiden voyage of his company's ocean liner, the RMS Titanic, in 1912. This life story, written in 1902, precedes the Titanic disaster.
