Writer and social entrepreneur
Stewart Brand is a writer who also initiated several important projects. Deeply involved in the California counter-culture of the 1960s, he initiated the Whole Earth Catalog, which was published from 1968 to 1972. The editorial focus was on self-sufficiency, ecology, alternative education, "do it yourself" (DIY), and holism, and featured the slogan "access to tools". He also initiated the Long Now Foundation, a non-profit organisation which promotes long term thinking. Its projects include the 10,000 year clock. He lives with his wife in a converted tugboat moored in the San Francisco Bay.
