Ruth Brandon, who lives in London, is the author of twelve non-fiction books, mostly dealing with the social and cultural history of the 19th and 20th centuries. She has also written seven novels. All four of her grandparents were refugees from the antisemitic pogroms in Russia at the turn of the 19th to 20th centuries. She was educated at the North London Collegiate School, and Girton College Cambridge. She worked in current affairs television before becoming a professional author. The subjects of her books range from Singer and the Sewing Machine, through Sarah Bernhardt, Harry Houdini and Helena Rubinstein, to the Spiritualists and the Surrealists.
