ernest russell lyon, born 1922
spitfire pilot who died in action aged 21
Russell Lyon was a Scottish Spitfire pilot who was killed on operations over France in 1944, at the age of 21. He was buried by the German authorities in an unmarked grave. His nephew Richard Lyon set out to identify his uncle’s burial place, and to ensure that his sacrifice was recognised with a marked grave. After years of effort, with the help of many others, and after challenging and changing the Ministry of Defence standard of proof for such war grave recognition, he was eventually successful. This moving life story comprises the first three chapters of the book ‘Finding the Ring of Truth’ written by Richard Lyon and Jean-Yves Le Lan, and published by Janus Publishing Company Ltd, Cambridge, UK.
