ROBIN GARRAN, BORN 1938
INTERNATIONAL TRADE ADVISOR

Robin Garran was commissioned into the Brigade of Gurkhas for his National Service, then took a degree at Cambridge University. This entry in Lives Retold consists of an account of the Cambridge Expedition to Nepal 1961, which he led, and, with his family’s permission, the eulogy given by his son Julien at Robin’s funeral in April 2025.  Robin made the expedition to Nepal in a summer vacation, with five Cambridge contemporaries. They drove 7,500 miles in each direction, trekked for five weeks in the foothills of the Himalayas, and had many adventures. Robin was the principal author of the account. Roger Garside, another member of the expedition who also did his National Service with the Gurkhas, has recently edited and somewhat expanded it as a tribute to Robin. Robin developed a career as an expert in trade policy and regulation, particularly within the European Union. He co-founded and led a very successful consultancy with that specialisation.
