Sir Richard MacCormac was one of the leading architects of his generation, famous for the sensitivity of his buildings to their context and their materials. After National Service in the Royal Navy, he read architecture at Trinity College, Cambridge, completing his architectural training at the Bartlett School, University College London. After working on local authority housing, he formed his own practice MJP Architects, initially with Peter Jamieson, then with David Prichard. Notable buildings by MJP Architects include college buildings at both Oxford and Cambridge, the Cable & Wireless training centre, Southwark London Underground station, and the refurbishment and extension of Broadcasting House. He was an active member of the Royal Academy, chairing their architecture committee for ten years, and was President of the Royal Institute of British Architects from 1991 to 1993.
