philip steadman, born 1942
professor of architecture
Professor Philip Steadman was educated at Winchester College and Cambridge University. Trained as an architect, he is an architectural teacher and researcher. His particular architectural interest is in the geometry of buildings and their environment. He pursued his research at Cambridge University and the Open University, and works currently at University College London. His interest in the geometry of architecture has led him to a remarkable discovery about the working methods of the painter Vermeer. In his book Vermeer’s Camera he demonstrates convincingly, and to the dismay of some art historians, that Vermeer had used a camera obscura.
