Philip Henry Stewart Reid was educated at Osborne and Dartmouth. He spent his career in the Royal Navy, serving in the First and Second World Wars. At the outbreak of the Second World War he was stationed in Singapore. He was captured at the fall of Singapore, and spent most of the Second World War in a Japanese prisoner of war camp at Palembang, Sumatra.
