Michael Nelson, the son of a carpenter, read history at Magdalen College Oxford, then joined the news agency Reuters. He rose to be General Manager of the company, and played a key part in the transformation of Reuters from a news agency serving newspapers to a provider of electronic information services to the financial sector. After he retired from Reuters he published five books. These included an account of the role of broadcasting in the Cold War, an autobiography, and three books on the history of the French Riviera.
