michael mahon, born 1945
IRISH AIRLINE PILOT
Born into a stronlgy Catholic family, Mike Mahon has vivid childhood memories of adventurous seaside picnics at Brittas Bay, south of Dublin, with his extended family. He joined the Irish army reserve, and trained as an airline pilot with Aer Lingus. He took part as a young man in the air race from London to Sydney, Australia. His flying career started with cargo planes, sometimes carrying racehorses or live calves. He later flew passenger airliners for Nigerian Airways and for Gulf Air, based in Bahrain. In retirement he obtained a BA degree from the Open University.
