NAVAL WIFE AND WRITER

Louisa Fownes Luttrell Reid was the daughter of a West Country Liberal Member of Parliament, whose family had owned Dunster Castle in Somerset since 1378. Louisa married Philip, a career naval officer, in 1937. She escaped to South Africa from Singapore with her two small children in 1941, just before the Japanese invasion. Her husband Philip was captured by the Japanese, and it was some years before she knew he had survived. She lived in Somerset, in Bath, in Kirkintilloch near Glasgow, and in London. She and Philip retired to Somerset, where she developed a career as a prolific writer of magazine articles - mainly on garden design.
