Leopold Larmuth, Born 1855
ear surgeon in the lake district
Leopold Larmuth, who is believed to be of Huguenot descent, came from a family which was engaged in various forms of mechanical engineering. He undertook his medical training in Manchester, and qualified to practise in 1882 by taking the London MB degree. He then worked in Vienna as an assistant to the pathologist Bamberger. He returned to Manchester and was appointed to the honorary staff of the Ear Hospital and also as a consulting surgeon to the Royal Schools for the Deaf. He was very successful as a surgeon for diseases of the ear, throat and nose, the fine operations required in such work being eminently suited to his mobile hands and delicate, sensitive fingers, which could manipulate the finest parts and screws of the smallest watches with ease. He settled at Ambleside in the Lake District in a house which was later bought by the author’s parents.
