LIFE AS A PRISONER OF WAR

John Murray Melville was training to be a lawyer when the Second World War broke out. He joined up in the Gordon Highlanders, and was posted to Singapore, arriving by troopship in September 1940. When Singapore fell to the Japanese in February 1942 he was taken prisoner. He later wrote this account of his harrowing wartime experiences. Following the war he completed his legal training and became a solicitor in a firm in Holborn. He married and had four children. He retired in 1984 and died in 1989.
