John Luttrell, Born 1915
A CAREER IN MIDDLE EAST OIL COMPANIES

John Fownes Luttrell was the sixth of seven children born to Hugh Luttrell, MP for West Devon and a member of the Luttrell family of Dunster Castle, Somerset. He was educated at Dauntsey’s School in Devizes, Grenoble University, and the School of Oriental and African Studies as the University of London. At the age of 20 he went with his older brother William to Spain during the Spanish Civil War. In 1940 he joined the Intelligence Corps, serving in the Middle East during the war and in Germany after the war. He then returned to the Middle East working in Iraq and Iran for British Petroleum, then for the Iraq Petroleum Company in Tripoli, Basrah, Kirkuk, and Qatar. He returned to England in 1968.
