FARMER & MAGISTRATE IN DORSET

Malcolm James Cockburn, known throughout his life as Jim, came from a family of Scottish iron founders. He took his degree in Chemistry at Edinburgh University, and married Elizabeth Whetham, whom he had met during a sea passage to New Zealand. They had two children, Malcolm and Jan. Instead of joining the family firm, Jim decided to pursue a passion for farming. He bought a sheep and cattle farm at Ratchill in Peebleshire, then moved to the Hilfield Estate in Dorset, which he bought from his father-in-law Sir Malcolm Dampier. He combined his farming life with many years as a magistrate, and as chairman of the Rural District Council.
