James Alexander Burns, known as Jim, was born in the Argentine of a Scots father and a Scots-Uruguayan mother. At 17, after schooling in Rosario, Edinburgh and London, he joined a British coal and shipping agency. His first job was as a coaling clerk in the Cape Verde Islands, his last as general manager in Brazil. Following retirement he worked in the British Embassy in Rio de Janeiro before returning to Britain in 1949.
