Horace Day was descended from a famous Southampton shipbuilding dynasty. He was keen from an early age to join the Royal Navy. He attended the naval Osborne College from 1911 to 1912, moving on to the Royal Naval College at Dartmouth. In 1914 he was called into active service along with all cadets aged 16 or over. He served in the Royal Navy throughout the First World War, engaging in skirmishes with German warships, and taking part in the Battle of Jutland. In 1917 he was serving in HMS Tornado when it was sunk of the Dutch coast. He survived, and left the Royal Navy after the First World War. He joined Imperial Chemical Industries, where he rose to the role of company secretary. He was recalled to active service in the Royal Navy during the Second World War.
