gERRY MARTIN, born 1930
ENGINEER, ENTREPRENEUR & PHILANTHROPIST
Gerry Martin was an engineer, entrepreneur, and philanthropic supporter of the study of the history of science. He founded Eurotherm, a UK manufacturer of temperature controls which became a successful global company. With Professor Alan Macfarlane (the author of this life story) he wrote ‘The Glass Bathyscape: How Glass Changed the World’. Professor Simon Schaffer, whose work Martin supported, described him as ‘an entirely self-effacing catalyst of innumerable initiatives, projects and programmes. I have never met anyone who could provoke such intense, energetic, committed work’,
A page of Alan Macfarlane’s website provides links to a 42 minute film of Gerry Martin speaking at a 2003 Cambridge seminar on the theme of Glass, and to other writings by Martin. To access the page, please click here.
