historian of the 19th century
Eric Hobsbawm was a leading writer on the history of the 19th century. Born in Egypt of Jewish parents, he was brought up in Vienna and moved to England at the age of 16. He took his undergraduate degree and PhD at Cambridge University. His main career was at Birkbeck, University of London. He became a convinced communist at the age of 15, and remained so for the rest of his life.
