edward cullinan, born 1931
architect

Ted Cullinan, who died in 2019, was one of the finest British architects of the 20th century. His buildings were thoughtful and daring, several being listed during his lifetime. These include his own family home in Camden Town, built in 1964, and his first major work in Britain, the striking ziggurat halls of residence at the University of East Anglia. Other notable buildings included the Fountains Abbey Visitors Centre, the Cambridge University Centre for Mathematical Studies, and the Downland Gridshell. He was in 2008 awarded the Royal Gold Medal for Architecture, the highest award of the Royal Institute of British Architects. He built a successful practice on highly democratic principles, using a co-operative structure in which every member of staff had a vote on important decisions.
