eddie smith, born 1890
a royal engineer in the first world war
George Edward Smith, known as Eddie, joined the Northern Signals Unit of the Royal Engineers in 1914. He had been working as a telegraphist at the Post Office, to which he returned after the war. In 1915 he embarked by troop ship to the Dardanelles. Following the Dardanelles campaign he served in Egypt and Palestine. He got back safely to England where his bride to be Madge Higgins awaited him. He maintained a vividly descriptive daily diary throughout the First World War, which forms the basis of this life story.
