David Butler was born in North London. His father Jim had a small upholstery business, which was run by his Aunt Flo while Jim volunteered in the RAF during the Second World War. David Butler won a local authority award to the Mill Hill boarding school. He won an Open Scholarship in classics at Keble College, Oxford where he wrote a significant research report into the pre-classical history of Sparta. After Oxford he joined the finance department of Hertfordshire County Council, where he became involved in the early introduction of computers. This led to other computer management jobs, into consultancy, and to the founding, with his colleague George Cox, of Butler Cox PLC, which  grew into a highly successful international company. In retirement David Butler became a playwright.
