Colin Campbell was the son of Archibald Campbell, an expert on Scottish piping and member of the Indian Civil Service who became a judge of the High Court in Lahore. After Harrow School and Pembroke College, Cambridge, Colin Campbell joined the colonial service and was posted to Kenya. He then took up a post as colonial secretary (deputy to the Governor) of the Falkland Islands, where he served from 1952 to 1955. He was then posted to Kenya, where he rose to be Permanent Secretary in the Ministry of Defence. After retirement from the colonial service he took up a second career as a schoolmaster, teaching English, Latin, Mathematics and Games at Marsh Court Preparatory School, near Stockbridge in Hampshire.
