Clarence Trelawny, born 1826
OFFICER IN THE RADETSKY HUSSARS

As the second son of a wealthy family, Clarence Trelawny had to make his own way in the world and obtained a commission in the Radetsky Hussars of the Austrian army. In 1854 he married at St. James, Piccadilly, Miss Howard, the notorious and beautiful cast-off mistress of the French Emperor, Napoleon III. Clarence was looking for a wealthy wife and Miss Howard for a respectable marriage. The marriage shocked the Trelawny family who refused to recognise Miss Howard or invite her to their home. The marriage was childless and unhappy, and in 1865 they were divorced. Five years after her death Clarence married another striking beauty, Mary Campbell, by whom he had five daughters. This life story is told around a pocket watch which was passed down through several generations of the Trelawny family.
