A LIFE IN AGRICULTURAL MACHINERY

Charles William Dawkins started helping out in his grandfather’s newsagent and boot repair business when he was six and left school at 12. At 16 he was hired by Fred Massey, who was setting up the European operations of agricultural machinery maker Massey Harris, as its first employee. Massey Harris became Massey Ferguson, and Dawkins rose to manage its European operations for twenty years. He was a great admirer of Fred Massey, and gave the Massey name to his only child, a son. Massey Dawkins read medicine at Emmanuel College Cambridge, and became a pioneering and distinguished anaesthetist.
