Born at the foot of the Berwyn mountains in Penybontfawr Montgomeryshire, Berwyn inherited a tradition of music and Welsh male voice choirs. Educated at Llanfyllin High School, he went on to study Civil Engineering at Liverpool University. This took him to Hong Kong in 1976 where he founded the Hong Kong Welsh Male Voice Choir. On his return to the UK he joined the London Welsh Male Voice Choir, for whom he compèred, as well as for the British Lions and Comrades choirs, over a period of 20 years.
