Bernard Gillie’s grandfather Paul Johnstone Gillie emigrated from Scotland to Canada in about 1876. He was later followed to Canada by his son James, father of Bernard Gillie. Bernard was brought up on the family farm in Strawberry Vale, near Victoria on Vacouver Island, British Columbia. He trained as a teacher and describes in this life story his first teaching job in a lumber town in norther British Columbia. Bernard Gillie taught in several schools, then returned to university. He was very active in teachers organizations becoming President of the British Columbia Teachers Federation in 1944-45. From 1962 to 72 he worked in the Northwest Territories, first as a Superintendent of schools then Director of Education. He retired to Victoria.
