BASIL & KATHERINE TRACEY, BORN 1899
doctor & MOTHER

Basil Tracey, born at the family home in Devon, was the seventh of eleven children. His father was a country doctor. Basil trained as a surgeon at Barts and spent his career in medical practice as a family doctor in Norwich. He was also for many years the doctor at Norwich Prison, for which work he was awarded the OBE. In 1931 he married Katherine Scott. They shared a passion for sailing, including racing, for which there was much opportunity on the Norfolk Broads. Basil loved travel, taking his family around Europe with a caravan before that type of holiday became popular. His enthusiasm and interest in everything and everybody were infectious both for family and for his devoted patients.

As an aside, Peter Tracey writes that he still has items of furniture given to his father by grateful patients. One display case continues to be remembered as Mrs Pready. Another patient with limited life expectation showed father a painting by Edward Seago, a well known artist. ”This is for you Doctor, when I go”. He replied with a twinkle “I can’t wait Betty”.
