Herbert Eckford, Born 1867
PIONEER IN THE CANADIAN WEST
Alexander Herbert Eckford, known as Herbert, and his wife Christina (nee Hendrie) are part of the rich history of Alberta, Canada. Herbert emigrated from Scotland at the age of 17 and set up a small ranch of 35 acres in Manitoba. He prospered and became owner of the large High River Horse Ranch and a shareholder in the Calgary Brewing and Malting Company. Eckford was an accomplished polo player and a keen tennis player. On retirement in 1914 he and his wife sailed from New York to Liverpool on the ill-fated Cunard liner Lusitania. The following year it was sunk by a German submarine with the loss of 1198 lives. The Eckfords settled at Templeknowe, St.Boswells, Roxburghshire. They were childless, and on Christina’s death the house was left to Herbert’s cousin Philip Henry Stewart Reid.
